Does God need you?

August 6, 2019

There’s a scene in the Bible where Jesus is about to enter Jerusalem, and He does so while riding on a donkey. Just before that, Jesus sends two of His disciples to go look for the said donkey.

“As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent out two disciples, saying to them, “Go into the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt beside her. Untie them and bring them to Me. If anyone questions you, tell him that the Lord needs them, and he will send them right away.”

Matthew 21:1-3

So the disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them.

They find the donkey, untie it, and bring it to Jesus.

But here’s something that Jesus says that is quite fascinating. He says – “….tell him that the Lord needs them.”

The Lord needed the donkey.

He NEEDED the donkey.

He needed the DONKEY.

The Creator of it all, the King of kings and Lord of lords, the Sovereign Master stood as a man, needing a donkey to ride on.

Did he really? Well, I don’t think so. But I believe He CHOSE to need that donkey.

He said, “The Lord needs them.”

“Well, what’s your point?”, you say.

My point is that He is saying the same thing about you.

In His sovereignty, and His power, and His might, and His love, He has ordained this world and dialed into our lives in a way that He has chosen to somehow partner with us to carry out His plans, to somehow call us co-heirs in all that He has in store.

It sounds almost blasphemous until you read Romans 8:17.

But it’s the truth, isn’t it?

The Lord has chosen to need you.

He used the donkey, and He wants to use you.

Oh and here’s another truth. That donkey? It was chosen to carry Jesus way before it was born.

Centuries before even Jesus was born, it was prophecied (Zechariah 9:9-13) that Jesus would ride on THIS donkey.

Jesus says the same thing about you.

He chooses to say He needs you.

And it doesn’t matter what you’re tied to right now, it doesn’t matter what’s holding you back or what’s restricting you.

Like the donkey, He’s going to untie you, He’s going to set you free, and He’s going to carry out the amazingly beautiful plans for you.

All you have to do is let Him steer you.

He used the donkey. He can definitely use you.

For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. - Ephesians 2:10
