The hardest lesson for a Christian to learn

February 26, 2026

For a person who follows Jesus, one of the hardest lessons to learn is to become interruptible.

When you look at Jesus, He was constantly being interrupted. When He was on His way to heal Jairus’ daughter, He was stopped by a woman who was sick.

When He wanted to go and grieve the death of His cousin, people showed up from nowhere, and He had compassion on them.

When He was preaching a sermon, He was interrupted by men who dug a hole through the roof to help their friend.

Interruptions are so annoying

Especially because we make our plans and we like having things a certain way – our way. We plan for the day, the week, the month, and sometimes even make a five-year plan.

And yes, God honours that. But no matter what we plan, there are going to be interruptions – from people who need help, from unexpected inconveniences—a sickness, a loss, a wound.

And we fear that these interruptions slow us down. That they take something away from God’s plan for our lives, from our calling, from our purpose.

But the truth is – very often, even if the interruptions are not a part of our plan, they are a part of God’s perfect plan.

Jesus did everything the Father told Him to do. And so, if He stopped for what seemed like interruptions, it was only because the Father told Him to do so.

And Jesus wasn’t just interrupted. He was also the One who interrupted others. He interrupted Matthew the tax collector’s workday. He interrupted Peter’s fishing. He interrupted the woman who was trying to draw water for herself.

The unpleasant things we face are not interruptions to our lives. What we call interruptions are actually just life happening.

I think many of our fears about interruptions slowing us down fade away once we realize one important truth: all our time isn’t our time. All our time is God’s time.

He gets to choose what to do. He gets to lead the way.
