Before I was married, I was dating my now husband, Wendell. And, you know, we were going through that period – or rather, I was going through that period – where I was not sure whether this was something that I should take forward.
People who know Wendell and me know how different we are as people. So I was in that confused state. And I gave him a lot of heartache in the process.
I remember, a couple of months into our dating, I was travelling somewhere on work, and I was coming back. I was on an aircraft. I just remember we were about to land, and as we started descending, I remember just closing my eyes and just praying and saying, “God, God, give me affirmation. Just say yes or no, because I really don’t know. I can’t make up my mind. It’s driving me nuts, and it’s driving Wendell nuts because I’m constantly going back and forth.”
And these were my words. My words were, “God, please give me affirmation. Give me affirmation.”
And then I did that one thing where, you know, a lot of Bible teachers and pastors say, “Don’t ever do this.” I opened the Bible to a random page to look for a sign.
I took out my Bible and I just opened. And just to give a little context, before I tell you what I read, the Bible that I had was none of the popular translations.
Actually, I have not seen anyone else have that particular translation. So, it was like, if I may say, like an idiot’s Bible. Simple English, no fancy language, nothing.
And just going back to the question I had asked, I said, “God, please give me affirmation. Please say yes or no.” And I opened the Bible like this, and the first words that I read was, “Yes, God’s affirmation.”
It just kind of blew my mind. I think it was 2 Corinthians, but if you open that in any other Bible translation, the word “affirmation” is not in it.
And this is what I felt. Of course, it scared me a lot because I was like, “Oh my God.” But it was just so crazy because I had asked, and God was just so good that He said, “I’m not even going to try and give her some verses where she has to figure it out and understand it and think about it.”
She said, “Give me affirmation,” and I’m saying, “Yes, God’s affirmation.”
That story has been really God speaking to me directly, specifically, simply into a situation in my life.
