Very often, we think about God too casually. We take Him for granted, do not consider His holiness or His majesty, and forget how amazingly awesome and powerful and huge and marvelous and indescribable He is.
We think of Him as a tiny genie in a bottle who is here to do our bidding whenever we need Him.
Nothing could be farther from the truth.
God is God. He is higher than we can imagine, His ways and thoughts are beyond what we could ever comprehend.
His love is so great, that we can never understand it. He holds the universe in the palm of His hands.
Nothing is higher than Him, nothing is greater.
And yet, it is possible to have a view of God that is too high.
Now I know what you’re thinking.
BLASPHEMY!
First I say that we think too small of God, and now I say we think too big of Him?
Yup!
I’m saying we do both, sometimes simultaneously even.
It’s easy to recognize when we do the former. It’s the latter that’s tricky though. It’s subtle. We don’t recognize when we think too big of God.
Because that place can feel a lot like humility, as false a humility as it is.
You see, here’s what we do sometimes. We end up thinking that God is so big and so beyond our comprehension, that we end up believing that He is also far beyond our reach.
We end up believing that He is inaccessible. That He doesn’t care about the little things in our lives. That He is far away.
And we focus on the fact that He is transcendent, while forgetting that He is also intimate.
You see, God is not just all powerful, but He is also all loving.
He is close – even closer than the air you’re breathing right now.
And He cares – with all His heart.
We have got to get it out of our minds and hearts that He is far beyond us.
We’ve got to remember the truth – that not only can He be close to us, but more importantly, He wants to.
Deep down, our tendency is to always believe that God is inaccessible.
And guess what? He was. He really was beyond our reach.
We could not get to Him.
But that’s the point.
He came to us.
And its not like He said, “meet Me halfway”, no!
He came ALL the way.
He came to heal, and to be kind, and to love you with a love that no one else can give.
And He still wants to do it today.
So if you’re sitting there today, thinking that God is way too high for you to reach out to, or that He doesn’t care about you, or that He’s just created this world and now wants you to get your act together and deal with life, it’s time to start believing the truth –
God, the all powerful transcendent God, is also the intimate God.
He can be close to you.
He wants to be close to you.
He IS close to you.
He was inaccessible. But He isn’t anymore. Because He Himself paid the price to get rid of what kept you away from Him.
And now He is there – with you, in your room, as you read this.
And how He wants you to know – that He loves you.
He truly, genuinely, loves you.
