Imagine you are sick – maybe you have a cold, a running nose, or a pain in your chest, or you are throwing up constantly, and imagine you go to a doctor.
The doctor asks, “What’s happening?”
You look back and say, “Help me, I’m sick.”
The doctor says, “Tell me what you are feeling.”
But you respond, “Help me, I’m sick.”
“What are your symptoms?” the doctor asks, frustrated.
“Do whatever you need to do. Heal me. I’m sick,” you say.
Wouldn’t that be absolutely annoying and pointless?
You wouldn’t dare go to a doctor and say you are generally sick. You’d want to be as helpful as possible to your own body by explaining every symptom.
You’d tell the doctor that you have a running nose, you are going to point to the exact spot on your head where the pain is the worst, you are going to say when the symptoms started, what you ate, how you’ve been feeling, and how often you’ve been throwing up.
You’re even going to go as far as to say what you found while googling the symptoms.
You are going to be as specific as possible.
Aren’t you?
And yet, somehow, our prayers to God seem so general. Especially when it comes to confessing our sins.
“Lord, bless me.” With what?
“Lord, Your will be done.” Okay, but what do you want?
“Lord, forgive me”. But for what?
How are we so vague with God when the Bible calls us to pour out our hearts before Him? (Psalm 62)
A meaningful relationship with Him means being specific about what we are going through – about our sin, our pain, our joys, our feelings.
About how we are tempted, what we think are our weaknesses, and how we tend to run away from God.
We’ve got to learn to be specific with God. To get down to the depths of our hearts and pour it out to Him. To be completely transparent with Him.
Because the truth is – He already knows everything. He knows our hearts. But we don’t.
And it’s only when we expose our hearts that He will do His deepest work of healing.
Go to Him – your doctor, your healer, and tell Him everything.
