Your map is different

October 30, 2018

Honesty moment: It’s really hard to look at the journey of other people and not compare it to your own.

I’ve been subject to that weird feeling for a couple of months that forms in the gut when I pop onto Instagram or Facebook and suddenly feel myself sinking into self-doubt. I start unraveling and wondering: why does my story not look that way? How come that didn’t happen for me? Or better yet, I start making statements: I could do that. I could try that. I could be that.

Dear heart, your map is different than the map of others.

There’s really no comparison. They say comparison is the thief of joy. Whoever “they” are, they’re preaching loudly. But comparison is more than a thief, it’s a distracting devil that will keep you from possessing what God truly, truly has for you.

I have this picture in my brain of God sitting at a long table waiting for me. and He’s got a map before him. And He wants to point out all the places we could go, the different things He chose for me. He doesn’t do imitation or second-rate plans. He makes a new map for you.

If you spend your days focusing on what other people are doing, you’ll miss what God wants to do with you.

You’ll miss what’s unique about your story. And let’s be honest, there is far too much imitation in the world already. What we need is people who are willing to get alone with God, dig deep, and figure out what they bring to the table. Because it’s different than what someone else brings.

You won’t get where you’re going if you’re trying to follow the GPS of someone else. You’ve got a different destination love. And you have one job today: get there. With all you’ve got, enter into what God has for you today. That map is yours.

The Lord will fulfill His purpose for me; Your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever. Do not forsake the work of Your hands. - Psalm 138:8
